Now You Get New Co-op Deals Twice a Month
Beginning in September...

In order to get the best deals possible for our owners and customers, The Merc is a member of a larger co-op, the National Cooperative Grocers' Association (NCGA).
NCGA is launching a new brand, "Co+op, Stronger Together." Besides the new logo and fresh new look, you'll see more deals, more often, quarterly coupon books and twice the number of sales flyers.
In September, you'll notice changes to our sales flyer, sale signs, coupon books and other materials provided by the NCGA. In your September Merc News you'll find two sales fliers - one for the first half of September, one for the second half (be sure to check the dates on the covers).
So watch for the new look and remember that there will be two flyers each month with great co-op deals!
Board Proposing Bylaws Change
The Board of Directors would like to amend our Bylaws to expand the board to a total of nine total members (seven voting, two non-voting).
We believe that this will assist the board in several ways:
- New board members bring added expertise and enthusiasm to our work.
- More voices at the table mean more diverse viewpoints to consider in our decision-making.
- The addition of two non-voting members gives us the opportunity to assess the proposition that we might expand the board to nine voting directors at some point in the future.
The board strongly believes creating a sense of community and cooperation is the hallmark of The Merc. While at this point only the elected board members will vote on policy changes, additional board members offer an increase in the diversity of community viewpoints, which can only strengthen our co-op.
The board will be voting to amend the Bylaws on Monday, September 13 at 6pm at our Board meeting. Merc owners are encouraged to attend this regular board meeting to express their opinions. If you would like to comment on our bylaw amendment but cannot attend our meeting, please send us an e-mail at: board@themerc.coop.

The Merc Welcomes "Principle 6" and "Co+op Stronger Together"
Principle 6 or P6 is a new initiative launched by Equal Exchange. Six consumer co-ops (including The Merc) are collaborating to build social justice into the food system.
Co+op Stronger Together is a collaboration of 114 consumer co-ops to
make sure our owners are getting great deals on great food.

Remembering our friend... Hal Sears
1942-2010
The Community Mercantile and our Lawrence community grieves the loss of Hal Sears, mentor, friend, counselor, confidant and Merc employee from 1982-2005. Will we be forever grateful for Hal's gentle guidance, patience, knowledge and humor.
